Heritage Horses as defined here, are horses which have a historical or contemporary use in the US, and which are still obtainable, and free of genetic or behavioral issues which interfere with sustainability. Some breeds which are in need of recovery are too rare now to be obtainable or so costly that they are impractical for the average farm or homestead. Many rare breeds have lost utility functions due to show breeding practices.
